Fran’s Class Term 3 Week 6

Dear Parents,

Thank you to everyone who drove us to the Fire Station. We had a wonderful time and the children got most of the questions answered. The only question we need answering is “Why does a fire get hot? ”

We did not get to go to Reverse Garbage because there was not enough drivers but Karen and Jack and Chris R are going to collect stuff for us on their way to school. So the creating of amazing costumes continues.

Next Tuesday 2nd of September we are off to the Aquarium for the day. A bus is collecting us and Pre School from school around 9:30 and then return us to school by 2pm.

The concert date has been changed to Tuesday the 23rd because of availability of the hall. Then on the 25th we are going to the Zoo. Term ends 26th of September. (Phew)

We are studying length this week, the letter ‘w’, comprehension practise with lots of reading and writing.

Fran’s Class Week 5 Term 3

Dear Parents,

The preparations for the concert have begun, we have a good idea of the script, we have begun our costumes and we need some music, does anyone have the music for the Tango! We have discovered we need more resources so we have planned a trip to Reverse Garbage at Marrickville next Wednesday 27th August, to get some more materials. So if you can drive please talk to me. We will leave at 9:30 and be back by 11:30.

Tomorrow we are off to the Fire station. If you can help with transport, please talk to me. We will leave about 10:10 and be back at school after 11:30. We did some experiments about different ways we can put out fire other than water. On Friday we are going to experiment with starting fires. Next week we will look at Fire extinguishers.

In Maths we are exploring geometry and dimensions. We are up to letter ‘V’. The older group is working with blends. Next Tuesday our PE choices change.

Frans Class Term 3 Week 3

Dear Parents,

This week we have been working with patterns and we have been looking at the patterns in music, we have even been writing our own music with each child having a turn at conducting their own compositions. We are up to the letter ‘T’. We have finished the mural for the sculpture garden and now we will be doing some planting.

We have also been doing some meditation as preparation for story writing, which has been interesting. On the 21st we are going to the Fire Station not the 14th because they had other plans. So if you can help drive please talk to me. We will leave here at about 10:15 and it is only 45 minutes so we will be back at school for lunch.

At Council on Monday I put a proposal for the school to have an affiliation with a school in Nepal which has been purchased by an ex-currambena student Pat Price. The council has accepted the proposal and wish to commit a small sum of money to this school each year. Our class and Pre school are going to have a stall on the 17th of September to raise some money for books, they only have 50 for 200 students. The school is called “Heart Land” On Monday night 11th of August Pat is going to have an information evening in my class and show use some photos and talk of his pans. If you are interested please come at 7pm. The website for the association is: www.forchildrights.com if you would like to read about our plans.

Fran’s Class Term 3 Week 2

We have got so much coming up that one of the children suggested we make a calender so we will be filling the next few months in this week. An other idea we would like to explore next term is going to a workshop at Tamarama which is during the sculpture by the sea and the children can make their own sculptures.

We completed area in maths last week and we compared the area of the windows and the doors to discover which was bigger and they decided to leave the paper up so we could have some privacy! This week we are looking at number again and have made number charts to 20 which are now around the walls.  We have been looking at place value and they are powering through the concepts.

It was decided on Monday that they have had enough of feelings so we published a book each which we will share in authors circle.  We have finished the murals for the sculpture garden and last week we moved the bird bath.  After we have put the murals on the wall we are going to plant some seeds in the garden and plant the rest of the trees.

Fran’s Class Term 3 Week 1

We are straight down to business. This term we are going to study sea creatures so a visit to the Aquarium is planned. We had a request to go to the Fire Station so that will be next. The other topic at this stage is Animals so we will be off to the Zoo at some time so we will keep you posted.

This week we are exploring our feelings and strategies to work with them. Yesterday we discussed anger and drew a picture showing a situation where we were really angry and then a place we can go to where we like to calm down and also a person we can talk too. Today we looked at jealousy and then thought about all we have to appreciate. Tomorrow sadness.

In maths we are looking at area. We have decided to create a sculpture garden by Wendy’s class so this afternoon we are going to start a mural on the wall. Then plant all sorts of flowers and plants to surround our sculptures.

Our inspecting visit is on the 5th of August so we are getting organized for that.

I hope you all had a great long weekend.

Next Monday we have Boori visiting. He is an aboriginal story teller, author and plays the didgeridoo. He has been visiting the school every year for over 15 years so is very much part of the Currambena Community. He will be visiting our class from 11:30 till 12:30. So we have been studying aboriginal art and how they produced their pictures. On Monday we made brushes with a little bit of our hair on a stick. We have also chosen a totem animal which we will study. We will be reading dream time stories and comparing cultures.

This week we are up to ‘P’. Some of the older group are reading children’s magazines. We will be looking at fractions in maths. Everyday we have been practising our skipping and recording our results.

Fran’s Class Term 2 Week 6

We had an amazing turn out at the Transition to Fran’s meeting. Well over 30 people. There were some great questions with a lot of people really engaging in what they want for their child and wanting to understand how Currambena works. Thank you so much to the wonderful team who created a flyer at very short notice, visited all the local Pre Schools, and posted flyers around Sydney. Then on the night setting up and baby sitting and then packing everything away. I felt a bit like a Princess ! So Karen, Jess, Rachel, David, Jo, Myung Jin, Mikee, Martin, Steve and Anne who made some wonderful scones. Also Thank you to the children who came and spoke, and  Payman and Kirsten who shared their experiences with everyone.

The 23rd of June is a busy day.

We are going to the Museum with Pre School and Olivia’s. If you can help with transport please talk to me.

On the 23rd at 7pm We are having a follow up meeting. ‘Your child and High school’. We will invite ex Currambena students of different ages and experiences to share their experiences with us and answer any of your questions.

On the 26th of June we are having a Jump off for Jump Rope for your Heart. I would like us to be sponsered as a class instead of individuals. I will put a sign up sheet on the day and we will add up how many time we can jump ropes for an hour. Great for our addition practise. The money goes to the Heart Foundation.

We have continued with our Bush theme this week. We have studied a variety of creatures that live in the area and we have added them to the mural (which is a bit worse for wear with the rain) We have also made a book of what we learnt. Do you know that Bull Ants are the oldest ants in the world?

We have been revising the alphabet so far. For the next few weeks we are going to be reading non fiction books and writing non fiction stories in our story writing books. This week we explored the concept of chance and will be introducing fractions.
