Dear Parents,
We are slowly working through all of the interviews. Thank you so much to all the parents who have come and spent time with us talking about your wonderful children, we look forward to seeing the rest of you.
This week the letter is ‘t’ and we have been reading poems about tigers and turtles. On Monday we had our first authors circle where everyone gets to read a story they have written to their peers – it was wonderful motivation. We have some natural orators. For maths we are looking at multiplication and division and we are continuing on numbers to 30 and 100, though some children are saying they can count to 1000 000, I have not asked them to prove it!
We continue to work on our personal goals, which is fun and very motivating.
Poor Sarah has been sick all week so we are hoping she will be back on Monday.
Jo and I are looking forward to seeing everyone who is interested in our meeting “Preparing your child for Kindergarten” on Monday evening at 7pm.
My attention is being demanded….
Take care

Hi everyone!
This is a brief we’re-in-interviews-and-constantly-writing-evaluations newsletter entry:
- We’re really enjoying the opportunity presented by the interviews that allow us to speak to you all at greater length than the usual stolen moments. Please sign up for an interview if you haven’t already done so.
- On Monday the 24th August we will be holding the ‘Preparing for Kindergarten’ evening at 7pm. This is not just for anyone coming to our class next year but will also be useful for people going to kindergarten elsewhere, so let your friends know. Flyers are available outside our classroom.
- We have been working on the letter s, blends ‘tr’ and ’sp’, syllables and sentence starters (e.g. Once upon a time…). In maths we have gathered data and graphed several different variables in our classroom.
Back to the evaluations…
Cheers,
Fran, Jo and Sarah

Dear Parents,
We finally completed our class meeting after three sessions yesterday with some important decisions made about the bases and dancing in the class. We had a lot of reminders about not taking things from other peoples lockers and tidy up. We had an interesting debate having desks not tables in the room.
The biggest debate and this has been an ongoing one, is do we go for an excursion to Luna Park?? Jane and Ethan have done some investigating for us and we have (finally) decided that we will go to Coney Island as it is in the price range for excursions and everyone can participate. We decided to go on a ferry from Greenwich. This will happen at the end of the term and will be our end of term party. So more on this later.
We are continuing this week to work on our personal goals, we are having a lot of fun with setting new challenges though I am still working on my one chin up!!!
The letter of the week is “R”. In maths we are continuing to explore numbers. We will be making charts to 30 and the older group is working on numbers to 100.
The interview timetable list is up on the door so please come in and write in a time. If none of the times suit please talk to us.
On Friday we had a visit from the Mayor of Lane Cove to present some trees for tree day. The children were very welcoming and contributed some interesting comments during his speech.
Next Tuesday night at 7pm We are having a presentation on our Adventure to Laura, so if you are interesting in joining us in two years or just want to hear about our trip please come along.
On the 24th of August we are having an evening to discuss preparing your child for kindergarten.
Take care

Welcome back everyone!
We’ve heard lots of stories from the holidays and it seems they were a truly mixed bag of good fun, trips away, relaxation at home, chicken pox and flu. Perhaps another term of Aussie Kids will seem calm by comparison?! Not likely! We’re looking forward to the joy and madness that is working with 33 kids- we have grown with the addition of another Oliver to our classroom, who has chosen to be known as Oliver 2. He’s already discovered the joy of morning tea in the trees. Welcome to Oliver and family!
With the beginning of term 3 we will begin our interviews, which will be held between weeks 3 and 5. We will put a timetable up next week so that you can sign-up for a time that suits you.
After much negotiation in school meetings, we have changed the way in which Friday is run. Rather than having Sustaining Currambena on Thursday afternoon, Choices in middle session Friday and then Free Afternoon, we have rolled all these activities into one long block on Friday. We have found that this enables each task or activity to expand and contract as necessary, rather than having to fit within specific time slots. We are also glad to regain Thursday afternoon to enable us to meet other areas of the curriculum. Fridays now begin with school meeting, during which we discuss the various activities that will occur throughout the day, then everyone disperses to their chosen activities. We have also restructured Craft so that each class has a lesson with Chris on Thursday and then individual children are free to continue working in the craft room on Friday. The model has worked well over several trials though we will no doubt continue to modify the plan.
A new (in-class) addition to the week is the setting of Personal Goals in the areas of English and PE. Each Monday we will all sit down and individually figure out what we want to achieve by the end of the week. Some examples from this week are to write two sentences in story writing and to climb all the way across the monkey bars. Fran and I will work with the kids on Friday to look at how each goal is progressing.
And just for your information, on Monday 24 August we will be having a Preparing for Kindergarten night at 7pm.
Take care!!

Dear Parents,
Wow three days til the end of term, and we have so much on! On Friday we are sending home the portfolios - this is a collection of work that the children have chosen to put in that they are pleased with. This is only a snap shot of the work that actually gets done during the day. We will make a timetable early next term for everyone to sign up for an interview.
Next term we are looking at numbers of children and how we are going to organise the classes so please talk to us about your plans for 2010.
There is chicken pox in the class so any strange spots….? that could be the cause. The holidays is a wonderful time to attack the lice invasion as well!
This week we will be writing recounts of some of the experiences we have had in the last few weeks. We have written about visiting Berry Island and also the toys we produced from the natural resources in the school. We are up to ‘Q’ in the alphabet and continuing to build on our sight words and sentence structure.
The Reunion was just wonderful. Thank you so much to Karen and the wonderful team who organised it all.
Take care

Hello everyone
Our visit to Berry Island last week was brilliant. It’s such a rich natural and cultural resource and we are so fortunate to have it so close to school. We look forward to visiting the island again later in the year as it would be gorgeous in summer. Thanks so much to all the parents who made the visit possible.
Next week we will be sending home portfolios. These are a snapshot of some of the work we have done so far this year and the kids have chosen the work that they think is most important to include. After you have had a chance to take it all in over the holidays, we will begin interviews early next term. You will be able to sign up when we get back after the holidays.
Next Tuesday we will be holding a fundraising stall with preschool to raise money for the school in Nepal. We would appreciate donations of toys, games, books and music to sell at this big event. We will also be selling ice blocks on the day so make sure the wallets are well stocked!
We have taken the opportunity of hosting the stall to work on our understanding of money. Work also continues to reinforce numbers with the younger kids and addition with the older group. We are exploring the letter P and related blends and integrating a few known words into story writing.
Last but by no means least we are very excited about the reunion on Sunday and would love to see you there for a laugh… and maybe a boogie? Groovy.
Hope you have a wonderful week!

Dear Parents,
I had a fantastic time at Laura at the Dance Festival in the weekend. It was an extraordinary experience. I have already inflicted my 350 photos on a number of people so watch out. We will talk more about the whole experience when Wendy and the rest of the children come back on Friday.
Thank you to the parents who came with us to the Zoo yesterday, it was a great day though as usual not long enough. Thank you to Jagger and his Dad who invited us to their house yesterday to see Jagger on the drums. It was so much fun.
Tomorrow we want to attempt to get to Berry Island so if you can drive us please sign up on the door. It does rely on the weather though. Boots and raincoats may be needed even if it isn’t raining when we leave!!
This week we are continuing our aboriginal theme and we have collected everything we can find in our environment and drawn what we want to make and this afternoon we will be making toys from natural resources.
We are working on the letter ‘O’ and continuing to investigate numbers from 11 to 20 with the younger group. We have been experimenting with fractions. I have been doing some one on one reading and assessing new reading levels which is always fun and exciting for me and the children.
There has been a change in our craft timetable and how we are using our Fridays and we will explain more when we have sorted all the logistics.
Take care

Hi everybody! (Every time I write that I hear Dr. Nick form the Simpsons in my head, though if I replace it with ‘hi all’ I hear a strange southern accent. Hmm.)
How lovely to be enjoying yet another wet week. We are hoping to go to Berry Island tomorrow though we will of course make a weather-based decision in the morning. If we are able to go, we would like to leave the school at 10:00am and return from the island at 2:00pm. Any help with driving would be brilliant, though of course this is tricky given the high chance that we may not be able to go. If your day is flexible, though, please try and keep 10 and 2 open for us. Thanks so much!
Fran has made the decision to go to Laura this weekend. It’s a huge commitment in terms of driving, effort, time and money and reflects how brilliant the experience was last time she was there. We are looking forward to the stories and photos which will be a rich addition to our Aboriginal studies which are continuing.
In addition to our Aboriginal studies, we are continuing to work through the alphabet, and have also begun exploring a few common sight words. We are working on teen numbers and subtraction, in addition to fractions. Some of the older kids have begun work on Personal Interest Projects which are more self-directed work, and these will begin to appear instead of learning stories for a while. Eventually we will return to a combination of both.
Currambena’s 40 year reunion is looming and we have prepared an alternative version of ‘I’m a believer’ that we will perform together. We will be sending a copy home with the readers and it would be great if you could use this as a reading activity and practice together.
We are still feeling wary about nits; please continue to check as often as possible.
Cheers,
Jo

Hi all!
We’re having trouble comprehending that it is week six already. Our classroom continues to evolve and it’s exciting to see the ever increasing skills and independence in work habits. We have been looking at chance and area in maths as well as addition and subtraction. In English alphabet work continues for the younger kids and blend studies for the older kids. We have all been terribly excited about exclamation marks and have used this as an opportunity to have a good yell. It has also been important lately to spend quite a bit of time discussing various issues that have arisen in the classroom and beyond, from respect for belongings to what makes a good friend and how to deal with conflict. If you haven’t yet done so, have a look at the ‘I statements’ that are on the wall in the purple room. Many of the drawings give a brilliant indication of the clear (and suitably cranky) body language that is being used throughout the school.
Thanks to the parents who continue to read with kids on Friday afternoon. It’s brilliant that the kids have a different opportunity to increase their confidence in reading and we’re glad to have parents braving the frequently noisy classroom to make this happen.
We intend to revive the practice of writing minutes from School Meeting and including them in the newsletter. Until then, an important recent decision that has been made is the locking of the Spare Room (where we hold school meeting). It was decided at School Meeting that the space should be locked and students request entry after we found that the space and equipment stored there was not being respected. We’re disappointed that this action has been taken and are hoping that another solution will soon be possible. For now though, if you need to open the Spare Room at all (for playgroup, meeting etc.) it would be great if you could re-lock it afterwards.
This Thursday night we have our AGM at 6pm. We do need quite a few people to attend to ensure we have sufficient numbers for votes etc. If you are able, we would be grateful for your attendance. Please bring hot soup and bread to share as a community meal for what will no doubt be another chilly night.
Hope you enjoy the long weekend!

Dear Parents,
Thank you to all the parents who came on Monday night to listen to our ideas around our programme and our plans for the class.
We began the evening discussing our own experiences of learning and what effect they had on us. Jo explained about the conference we attended in New Zealand and we talked about the different elements that inspired us and the ideas that we are implementing in our class. We talked about: play based learning, self directed learning, responsive teaching, physical environment and creeping conservatism. We answered some questions about the Registration and our accountability to the Board of Studies. We explained how we are using these new ideas to show how the learning is achieved and how we are also covering the requirements.
Please come in and read the “Learning Stories that Jo has done a wonderful job on. The children are really enjoying the process and regularly refer back to them and we often find the children at the wall talking to each other about what is happening. They are taking more ownership and directing the process themselves.
On Thursday it is Reconciliation up at the Lane Cove Plaza. The older children are going to do a performance and we are staying at school and preparing the Barbeque for everyone when they return as we have invited the Alexander Park Children for lunch.
Last Thursday we had a lovely time at Kinma, it is wonderful having this relationship with them and sharing ideas and experiences. The children get so much out of meeting other children and sharing their space.
Take care
