The kids have requested that the canteen page make a re-appearance in the newsletter. However now that the wonderful Jenny and then the wonderful Bronwyn are no longer parents in the school, we are missing some continuity in the canteen. For the weeks ahead after Easter there appears to be no parental volunteers.
Jenny used to tell me how she loved doing canteen as she got to know the kids so well and found this very educational (for her!) Kids love canteen and many parents love knowing the kids will be having a cooked meal for lunch. In particular she had great fun doing a proper sit-down with tablecloths and a roast meal. Of course you don’t need to go that far unless you want to!
It would be much appreciated if people could volunteer once or twice a term. Please put your name down on the roster on the main noticeboard. If there are no names for particular weeks, canteen will not be running for that week. The newsletter team will try to keep the web canteen page up to date. If the roster has been updated by Wednesday, then there will be a canteen page on the newsletter.

Last year we had a surf lesson excursion. Parent and photographer Jo Reynolds http://www.littlefeetphotography.com.au/ took some beautiful photos. You can see a selection here on the website or at her flickr collection of photo’s.
This is my favourite:

My favourite aspect of camp was the Giant Swing because it felt like you were flying and the free fall was really scary. It felt as if you were going to fall.
Camp could have been better if the food had been better quality because it sometimes wasn’t that cooked and it wasn’t always the food that we wanted.
I would recommend Mangrove Mountain Retreat for other groups because the Flying Fox is fun (you feel like a bat) and the Giant Swing was great. It also has good bushland there.

From Wendy,
Hi Everyone
We all had a fabulous camp last week. Many thanks to the parents who helped us. They were great. In spite of some drizzle, the weather was mostly OK and the many of the kids really challenged themselves on the different activities, from abseiling to the giant swing. I hope we’ll get some photos ready for this Newsletter.
We all enjoyed the performance by Lorin Nicholson yesterday. He was inspiring in many ways and his discussion of his disability, his blindness, links in with our support for the Paralympian, Matt Levy, to whom we have been writing letters of encouragement as he prepares for the selection trials in March.
Personal Interest Projects are beginning this week and we are working on Long Multiplication in Maths and written comprehension skills in English.
Thank you very much to the hard working Maintenance Team for all the sweeping and fixing yesterday, too. Great to get it all done before the rain last night!
Have a great week.
Love,
Wendy

Hi Everyone!
Well the sleepover on the James Craig has been booked. We will be spending the night on the boat on Thursday 26th June and visiting the maritime museum the following day before we head back to school (week 9, term 2). I will let you know of the complete costs when everything has been finalized.
A note to all parents… if you plan to come and stay the night, please let me know by the end of February as this might affect the cost for both the children and adults.
A reminder: Lorin Nicholson will be here next Tuesday afternoon for a guitar performance. Parents welcome to attend, cost of $6 per adult. Maintenance afternoon afterwards so please come and help out with that if you can. Also, a school social is happening on Friday 14th March. Please look in Julianna’s bit for more details on this.
We have been writing letters to our sponsor Paralympic swimmer Matt Levy who will be attending the Paralympics this year in Beijing. It gives a great opportunity for the children to be aware of a number of issues including disabilities and the Olympic experience.
Finally, a few requests… if anyone has seen our class’ yellow washing bag, could you please send it to school as we have run out of towels in our classroom.
Secondly, I forgot to mention the need for an education committee member from our class at the parent teacher information night. If anyone would be interested in becoming our class education committee member (or to find out about what it would entail) please come and talk to me.

Currambena students gathered early at school to watch the prime minister’s speech in parliament today. Currambena open heartedly embraces aboriginal history, values and issues. Classes usually participate in Lane Cove council reconciliation events.Aspects of the speech raised many emotions for the group. Staff then led those interested in a sing-a-long. This helped provide an outlet for the emotions. The group sang “Inanay” an aboriginal lullaby, “Brown Skin Baby” by Bob Randall and “Beds are burning” by Midnight Oil.

Welcome to the new school year everyone!
I would like to start by welcoming all the children and their families (new and old) into Olivia’s class. I look forward to spending the year with this amazing group of children. Already this year we have dates for your diary so please make note of them.
Tuesday 12th Feb @ 7pm: Parent/class meetings. An opportunity to get together with me and hear about all aspects of our classroom as well as ask questions. It would be great if you could all come!
- Tuesday 26th Feb @ 1:30-2:30: Lorin Nicholson, a blind guitarist will be visiting the school. It would be great if parents could attend if possible, I am sure it will be an interesting and entertaining afternoon.
- Swimming every Tuesday afternoon: please remind your child/ren to pack their swimming gear.
- Lane Cove Library every second Monday: please ensure any library books are either returned to the library or sent back to school with your child/ren so that they can carry them up to the library when we visit. Next visit will be the 18th of February.
We are beginning to start some units on a number of topics in our class which have originated from the group. These include axolotls (and other such animals), producing our own book of short stories, and the interesting and very exciting topic of place values in numbers for maths to mention just a few.
Well that is enough information for one week I think. Please feel free to come and talk to me before school and after 3pm.
