Building the Education Revolution update

The federal government is providing funding to develop school buildings as part of its economic stimulus package. There is a substantial amount of money available for all primary schools, including independent schools like Currambena.

This week the ‘Currambena Building the Education Revolution committee’* continued to investigate the possibility of applying for funding for some new building work at the school. Potentially we may be able to get up to $850,000 of grant money towards developing the schools master plan (2003). Any new building has to meet sustainable building design criteria, be built in 7 months, and be started on site by end of July 2009!!! Applications are due at the start of May 2009!!.

This week we met with the architect who has worked with the school in the past to get some initial advice on what the government is looking to fund and how our ‘wish list’ matches with their priorities. We also plan to have an initial discussion with Lane Cove Council this week, as we will have to apply for planning approval. In the next few weeks as costings and designs are developed there may be a variety of consultants at the school, usually in meetings or on the grounds.

The committee will be reporting to the School Council meeting on Monday 23 March if anyone is interested in hearing more about the details of the application process. We will also keep up this brief report in the newsletter each week – and hopefully beyond if we are successful. Jess Kimber (parent of Darcy in Fran’s and Scarlett in Preschool) is our community liaison and is at school every day and happy to take questions in person or via email: jkimber01@bigpond.com
