Firstly, thank you very, very much to Ursula, Myung-Jin and Sally for all the help with the gardens. We now have the beginnings of a genuine no dig vegetable garden and the children had great fun putting it all together. Thanks to Ursula for buying the compost etc and to Sally for the Peter Cundall book which will be very useful indeed. This Thursday in our Sustaining Currambena time, we will be planting out some herbs behind the low stone wall on the other side of the driveway.
Thank you also for the great generosity of the parents who donated some lovely baby clothes for the refugee mother-to-be with whom my sister is working. The clothes are much appreciated.
This week we have our excursion to the performance of “The Happy Prince” at Riverside Theatre on Thursday. We will need to leave promptly at 9:30 am and Mike, Charlie and I will be driving. We should be back by lunchtime. On Friday, Matt Levy (paralympic swimmer) will be visiting and speaking to Olivia’s and my groups and coming to school meeting. Next Tuesday, immediately after the long weekend, six of the children will be coming with me to the World Vision Global Leadership Convention for a day of activities relating to the 40 Hour Famine fundraiser in August. They know who they are and they also know they need to be at school by 8am so we can get comfortably to Homebush for the 9am start! We should be back at school by about 4pm and I will not be doing piano lessons that day.
In class we are working on fractions in Maths and text types and grammar in English. Our study of Australia has progressed to Captain Cook, the First Fleet and the early convict years and our student teacher, Charlie has given some excellent lessons and helped the kids make an “antique” map of Cook’s first voyage. Presentations on the Personal Interest Projects are beginning this week, too. The posters look great.
It was wonderful to see such team work in organising and such a great audience for our “Preschool to Kindergarten” meeting on Monday night. The next meeting will be “Your child and High School” on Monday 23rd June at 7pm. We will be inviting some of our ex-students to attend and offer their thoughts and answer questions. I’m sure it will be an excellent evening.
We are also hoping to complete all our Parent Interviews this term and, since our group will be away in Canberra for three days in the last week, this means holding interviews in the same week as the High School meeting. I will put up a timetable for these… please sign up for a time and speak to me if you have difficulty finding one that is convenient. These are our formal annual interviews and are an important aspect of our reporting process, an opportunity to discuss your child’s progress with you and with them, also, if they so choose.
Have a great week. Wendy
PS Two of our ex-students, Cameron and Blake, are offering to coach a basketball team for year 5 or 6 if there are enough children interested. I will send a separate note home about this today.
